Writing in red stitch
Done in cross-stitch, with red cotton thread, the alphabet was used as practice and reference for marking household linen with one’s initials.
Dupré’s research is inspired by samplers made by young women, school samplers including those made by her mother and maternal grand-mother.
Her most recent works have involved cross-stitched reconfigurations of the croix de-par-Dieu motifs often stitched on old samplers made in religious schools.
